The Details

Awareness.

A large component of our program is providing early exposure for students through career information sessions, local field trips, and original content creation. Closing the gap between what students imagine nursing to be and receiving first-hand knowledge is a key priority of CompassRN.

Long-term Support

Mentorship.

The CompassRN Mentorship Program is a dynamic initiative aimed at connecting high school students with experienced nurse mentors, fostering a supportive relationship that extends from the formative years of their education through their journey to becoming registered nurses. This program empowers mentees to excel academically, develop professionally, and overcome obstacles on their path to success. "I do think these programs – especially this one – are important because I had to look for opportunities and search for organizations that I could apply to so that I could help myself and possibly help my other peers - because we need that help as first-generation and low-income, under-resourced students - this is a really good opportunity for us to explore different careers and see if this what I really want do - - is this what I want to do for the rest of my life - and you have to really know because you don’t want to be in college and pay for a career that you know exactly nothing about.”

"Looking back, I wondered if I would still be indecisive about becoming a nurse if I hadn't gone to the camp... overall I had broad interest in becoming a nurse, but this camp gave me a deeper look into my perspective career path and acted as a turning point, helping me understand the steps to become a CRNA. A message that stood out from this experience came from one of the students at HCU and he mentioned that people might give strange looks for his occupation, but in the end, it's more masculine for him to pursue his interest without worrying about other's opinions. Those people who look down on him are stuck in the past and it's more admirable to endure criticism and follow your own path. This fulfilled my ambition and I am even more motivated to become a nurse."
